Ira reflects on Best Boy turning 30

Best Boy, the film, has just turned 30

As hard as it is for me to believe, it's been 30 years since I made Best Boy.

Little did I realize the kind of longevity and deep impact the film would have, and continues to have up through the writing of these words.

When I made Best Boy, I planned to do nothing more than tell a personal story.

It surprised me as much as anyone that Best Boy went on to have the social and cultural significance it did. And it still does.

Best Boy continues to be shown all over the world, in theatres, on television, in institutions of higher learning, in a multitude of social work settings, as well as in people's living rooms.

And what about Philly?

Thirty years later, many who see the film are STILL sending emails, asking about Philly's wellbeing, and telling stories of their own Best Boys and Best Girls.

Can Philly still be alive? Indeed he is.

Philly has thrived over the years since Best Boy

He's now 81 and, except for some high blood pressure and arthritis, he's in very good health.

He continues to live in the same group home.

He has many friends.

His days are busy with day center and group home activities.

His social life is still better than mine!

And although the flesh may not be quite as willing as it once was, his spirit more than makes up for it.

Philly's success is a lesson for us all

The fact that Philly has not only survived these thirty years-- but actually thrived and continued to grow--is truly a lesson for us all.

It's amazing what can be accomplished when stigma is set aside, and people are given the chance to live up to their full potential.

I'm grateful for the positive part Best Boy has played in the lives of countless others. I'm also grateful to have had the good fortune of having Philly in my life.

Comments

I have been a fan of the movie since I first saw it when it came out.

I am probably one of the only few people in the world who despise William Shatner as he made an off color comment about Ira and Philly when they won the award.  Ira thanked a slwe of people and Shatner said something like, "thank god he doesnt have any more retarded relatives" ---

Philly, you are an Inspiration....YEAH!

I can't tell you how much of an impact your films have had on me. I haven't been able to research much, but please don't stop making films. We need films like this. What you captured with your family will forever hold a very important and special place in my heart and I can't thank you enough for taking the time to make this and show the importance of simple humanity to people who I feel live in a world that sometimes forgets.

Sincerely,

Jamie Leigh

TO PEOPLE READING IRA WOHL'S BLOG ABOUT MY MOTHER FRANCES REISS IS UNTRUE . I WAS NOT UNFEELING. I WATCHED MY MOTHER,MY BEST FRIEND SLOWLY DYING BEFORE MY EYES I KNEW MY LIFE WOULD BE EMPTY. MY MOTHER IS ALWAYS IN MY THOUGHTS EVERYDAY. I WISH I COULD TELL HER ABOUT MY DAY AND HOW MY SON MICHAEL IS DOING AND ABOUT OUR CAT TEDDYBEAR. . IF IRA THINKS THAT I WAS UNFEELING . HE WASN'T LIVING 24 HOURS A DAY . OR VISITING HER IN THE NURSING HOME AND WATCHING HER GROW WEAKER EVRY DAY. AND FINALLY GIVING UP. EVERY YEAR ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF HER DEATH WHICH IS FEB.28TH,2004. I TAKE THAT DAY OFF BECAUSE IT'S TOO HARD TO WORK. I SPEND THE DAY THINKING ABOUT HER AND HOW MUCH I STILL LOVE HER AND MISS HER. SO IF YOU READ THAT I WAS UNFEELING IS A TOTAL LIE.

I just also watched "Best Man" and the time that has passedreally hit home with me. I want to buy the "Best Boy" or should I say the Best Family DVDs and share them with my 91 yr old Granny when I move to Iowa this spring from California to care for her. And Ira please let Fran know that if she needs someone there for her I will be there. Lots of love to you and your family!

I just watched "Best Boy" and cant wait to see the other 2 films, but I have to ask a disturbing question. How did Pearl die? She seemed so heartbroken to first loose her soulmate then her son and end up alone. Please dont tell me she took the poison!
